HISTORY

History

The city of Alwar has shown continual progress in the field of education. To impart higher education to his subjects, Maharaja Raj Rishi Dev established the Raj Rishi College here on 2nd of October 1930. It came into existence first as an Intermediate College but in the year 1945, it was upgraded to a Graduate College having faculties in Arts and Commerce. While graduate classes in Science and Arts started in 1952, postgraduate classes in Economics and Honours classes in History, Political-Science and Geography were started in 1967 and in the year 1972 Law classes came into being. Keeping in view the growing strength of students, with every succeeding year, the Rajrishi College was bifurcated in 1978-79 into two separate colleges - 'Rajrishi College' with Science and Commerce faculties and 'Government Arts College' with Arts and Law faculties. In the absence of a suitable building, the classes of Arts and Law continued in the Rajrishi College itself but in the year 1984, Govt. Arts College shifted to its present building which is situated near Rao Tularam Circle, Alwar.

In the year 1999, the Govt. Arts College was renamed after Babu Shobha Ram, one of the luminaries of the Mewat area. He was the first Prime Minister of the Matsya State, the hero of the 'Praja MandaI Movement' and a 'freedom fighter' as well. The Government of Rajasthan thought it appropriate to name one of the leading educational institutions of the state after him.  Our college has gradually emerged as one of the leading educational institutions of Rajasthan and specially attracts students from the rural and urban centres around Alwar. The Mewat area has long been known for its communal amity and cultural heritage to which Babu Shobha Ram Govt. Arts College, Alwar is a valuable addition. With so many students from the rural areas, this college provides a priceless training ground for the rigours of city-life, equipping them to face and resolve the problems of life with equanimity. An interesting aside to this facet is the flourishing folk culture and music that can be savoured on the campus. Many of its students have gone on to win acclaim as sports persons, politicians and academicians. It is hoped that in the years to come, this institution will take its rightful place among the premier institutions of this country where the youth may receive value-enriched academics along with encouragement to explore life with all its surprises and adventures.
