SAMRAT PRITHVIRAJ CHAUHAN GOVERNMENT COLLEGE, AJMER
Rabindranath Tagore has very aptly defined the goal of education by stating that “the highest education is that which does not merely give us information but makes our life in harmony with all existence”. Education now must be seen as fostering values that constitute the well-being of the individual on one hand and that of humanity on the other.
Samrat Prithviraj Chauhan Government College, Ajmer today enjoys the status of an illustrious and highly distinguished institute in higher education in northern India as it is striving unceasingly to achieve the highest goals of education. This renowned college was founded in the year 1836 by the directors of the East India Company as a school. Soon after its foundation, it gained popularity and drew students from all walks of life. In 1868 it became an Intermediate College and in the same year on January 17, the foundation stone of the present building was laid down by General Keating, Agent of Governor-General in Rajputana. By an epoch-making decision in the year 1869, it was made a full-fledged degree college and got affiliated with the University of Allahabad. In 1927 the University of Agra was founded and the college was affiliated with it. Faculty of Commerce was introduced in 1949 whereas the Faculty of Law came into existence in 1951. After the integration of the erstwhile state of Ajmer-Merwara with the state of Rajasthan, the college came under the jurisdiction of the University of Rajasthan in 1956.
This prominent college attained new heights in the year 1956 with the initiation of PG classes and now it was a Post Graduate College imparting education not only to the students of Rajasthan but to the aspirants from the neighboring states as well. The Maharshi Dayanand University of Ajmer was established in the year 1987 and finally, this college became affiliated with this university in that very year. Recently in 2021 Mahatma Gandhi Addhyan Kendra has also been set up in the college
To transform the dreams and aspirations of the youth into reality the college is highly equipped with facilities that make it a national level institute. It has adequate infrastructure that caters to the needs of around eight thousand students. The campus is a Wi-Fi facility for ICT-enabled teaching. All departments are connected
through LAN and the college administration’s major thrust is on paperless communication to conserve the environment. The college provides research facilities in various departments and several advanced research laboratories with high precision instruments are available.
The college library has DELNET and INFLIBNET facilities and e-journals and e-books are also there to be explored by the faculty and students. It has 1.80 Lac books that make it one of the biggest libraries of the state. The college has well-equipped Smart Classrooms, Smart science lab and lecture theatres to impart standardize education to the students. Most of the faculty members are research supervisors and many departments have functional and well-equipped research labs. It has a well-developed cricket ground, several courts for various sports, auditorium, seminar room, girls’ hostels, parking lots, girls’ common room, botanical garden, and various lavish gardens. Educational and historical tours are conducted regularly to give first-hand knowledge to the students. Well-equipped computer labs are also available. Hostel facilities are available for girl students.
