HISTORY

Government College, Barmer is the chief centre of higher education in the border district of Barmer. It offers high quality education to students coming from rural areas. Though in recent years there has been a mushroom growth of private colleges in the district, Government College, Barmer, still occupies a pivotal position in spreading knowledge in this remote frontier area. The calm and serene atmosphere of the campus contributes to the academic growth and excellence of the students of this area.

Government College, Barmer was established in the year 1965, initially in a school building. In 1967, it got its own infrastructure. At present the building has Administrative Block , Laboratories (Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology , Geography), a well furnished  Computer Lab ,an automated Library, Smart classroom, ICT enabled classroom,  Teaching Block, Student Union Office,  Sports Ground, Staff Room, Girls Common Room, Botanical Garden and , NCC Garden and Vehicle Parking. The building is furnished with Solar Panels and Rain Water Harvesting facilities.

The College runs under the administration of the Commissionerate of College Education Rajasthan, Jaipur of Government of Rajasthan.  It was previously was affiliated to M.D.S. University, Ajmer but from the session 2012-2013, it is affiliated to Jai Narayan Vyas University, Jodhpur.

The college provides facilities for Post -Graduate studies in 5 subjects and Graduate studies in 15 subjects in the Faculty of Science, Arts and Commerce. Research work is carried out in all the three faculties through registered guides and Ph.D. degree is also offered. The departments are engaged in    academis and co-curricular units as Women Cell, N.S.S., N.C.C., Air Rover, Y.D.C etc are active in developing over all personality and career of the students.  The College is also a study centre of Vardhman Mahaavir Open University, Kota.
