Formerly under the Malwa area, Pratapgarh has a rich historical as well as cultural heritage. This district has lush green areas covered with dense forest. Sitamata sanctuary is adjacent to the district head quarter. This sanctuary is worth visiting due to the availability of rare flying squirrels and highly advantageous medicinal plants and herbs. Inspite of these treasures of nature, Pratapgarh district forest stretch consists of numerous other wild animals which are found only in the specified area. The environment is totally pollution free and the climate is moderate. Pratapgarh is famous for Thewa art which reflects on the glass with golden works. Various fairs and festivals are the life line of this tribal district. The fairs of Goutamesvar, Bhanwarmata, Shivaratri, Ambamata are some of the worth-mentioning events. This district is also famous for the cultivation of opium plants.
