HISTORY OF THE COLLEGE

College History

R N Ruia Govt. College is situated in Ramgarh Shekhawati, located on Jaipur- Sikar- Churu Road, 190 Km from Jaipur and 70 Km from its present district Sikar and about 15 Km from the neighbouring district of Churu. This college was established in the year 1955 by the famous businessman and social worker Seth Ram Naraian Ruia (A native of Ramgarh), who was known as the “Cotton King” of india. The college was set up initially as an inter-college, and later in 1961 was upgraded to its present status of a good graduate degree level college with a view to provide good and high level of education to students of this area which at the time of setting up of this institution was lacking in the facilities of higher education.

Initially in 1955, only Arts and Commerce faculties were started but in 1961, degree level courses in Arts and Commerce were initiated, with affiliation to the University of Rajasthan, Jaipur. In 1965, bachelor’s degree in Science was also introduced. Since then the college has been providing high quality education to the students of this rural area. In 1968, the college was taken over by Rajasthan Govt.

The College at present provides facilities for imparting graduate (Bachelor) level education in Arts, Commerce and Science faculties. The financial aspects of the college are mainly fulfilled by funds/ grants provided by the State government, which take care of functioning expenses like salaries of faculties and the staff members, requirements of Laboratories (Chemicals, equipments etc.) and other general expenditure heads like office expenses, TA, Medical reimbursements etc. Apart from the state grants the college has received development grants from the UGC since the UGC- Vth plan.

Since the college is wholly a governmental institution, directions and rules of the State Government are strictly followed in matters of admissions, scholarships, purchase of items (equipments in Labs, Books in Library, Sports items etc.)

Special care is given to the students, coming from weaker and poorer sections of the society. Ever since its inception the college has sought to provide equal opportunities to all the students, irrespective of the sex, social background and is simultaneously also inculcating good habits regarding the pursuit of higher education (in Arts, Science and commerce faculties), maintenance of a time bound disciplinary routine, spirit of brotherhood etc.

Examinations are conducted as per an elaborate time-table and regulations. Degrees are awarded to the successful students by the University.

A good library is the backbone of an educational institute. The college library is housed in a large and elaborate building with a large reading room, a reference section for advanced readers and a room for stocking books. There are more than 30,000 books of various disciplines (encyclopedias, like Britannica, Book of Knowledge, Books on religion, culture, ethics etc.) Students and staff members can avail of the library facility on each working day from 10AM to 5PM

Since computers are affecting every facet of day-to-day life of man in modern times, government has made it mandatory for the students of Part Ist in Arts, Commerce and Science faculties to attend classes of elementary computer applications course which is now treated as a compulsory subject along with the two other compulsory subjects namely General English and General Hindi.

In the process of making continuous efforts to uphold and maintain the high ideals of the founding members of this college, regarding imparting of quality high level education to the students, various developmental programs have been prepared by the college and sent to the UGC authorities, who were kind enough to give funds (under College Development Assistance Programs) for the construction of library building, purchase of equipments in labs, computer, reference books as per requirement of teachers and students.  It is worthwhile to note that through constant efforts of the college authorities, such projects have been brought to their successful completion. Thanks to the UGC, the college now boasts of having a new large library building and modern equipments in the laboratories owing to which students have been able to gain access to the latest knowledge in respective discipline of Science, Arts and Commerce faculties. Apart from funds made available by the State Government and UGC, also certain generous wealthy donors and social workers have greatly helped (in terms of finance and construction) the college to have its own water supply system (under the auspices of Dhanraj Khaitan Trust, Mumbai) and members of the well known Johari family through whom we have got our two water coolers.
