Women empowerment will actualize in true sense only when we educate every girl child. Our college strives to promote girls education and their skill development. Through higher education our daughters will certainly get gender equality in the society, they will be able to earn and will raise their socio-economic condition and status.

Crimes against women have been increasing continuously throughout the country since last few years. When women are educated and given the tips for self-protection, they will know about their rights and will be able to live the life full of dignity, free from exploitation.

 The context

To develop a country socially and economically strong, girl’s education is very necessary. Educated girls are the weapon who yields positive impact on the society by contributing both at home and professional fields. By education and skill development programmes, we can improve economy and life standard of all the citizens. Girl’s education helps in breaking orthodox thinking of rural people, in eliminating illiteracy rate and developing self-esteem and self-confidence of half of the population.

There are many challenges for girl’s education and skill development programmes in higher education at the institute level. Some of the main problems are poverty, lack of means of transportation, social customs, budget deficiency for skill development, gender discrimination, lack of security, lack of infrastructure etc.

 The Practice

If a woman is educated, she uses education for the benefit of society and family. Due to an educated woman, the economic condition and domestic production of the country increases. For the education of girl students, all the three streams of arts, commerce and science are running at the graduate and post graduate levels in the college. Through various courses running in these faculties, girl students are on their path to shape their better future. Along with academics, co-educational activities are organized through NSS, NCC, Literary Cultural Committee and Women’s Cell etc.  In this college, girls from different villages of Churu and Nagaur districts come to study. A library and reading room equipped with more than 50,000 books are available for the intellectual development of the girl students. We constantly try to provide a safe environment to the girl students in the college; they should not face any inconvenience related to teaching and learning. We encourage them to participate in various co-curricular activities along with academic work so that they can get proper opportunities for personality development.

Various activities by the Youth Development Centre of the college are organised such as poster making, poetry, essay writing, guest lecturers etc. Various sports activities are also organised for the girls students by the sports department of the college. Girls have participated in sports competitions at the divisional level.

In 2019-20, state government launched MMYKY. Under this plan, English spoken and communication skill development programmes were conducted. Girl students can learn and communicate with each-other in English through this skill programme. Good environment for girl’s education and skill development programmes are provided and maintained in the institute so that they become strong and independent. It is true that without making girls educated and empowered, we can’t make a happier and healthy society and nation.

Keeping in view the importance of skill development programmes in higher education, plans have been made by the government to run them regularly and systematically to attain the aim of gender equality. Since our available resources are limited we cannot conduct this type of program consistently, but the institute ensures organizing the other possible activities like Art and Craft Workshop, Mehandi, Rangoli, Wall competitions, Salad decoration etc. under the platforms of Women Cell and Skill Development Programmes.

Hobby classes are being run successfully by the girl students from here. Due to continuous participation in sports activities, girls have also become better and aware in terms of physical health. Overcoming all the challenges, the college was very enthusiastic regarding imparting better communication skills of English language to our girls and once we announced about the training programme, 44 girl students got themselves registered for this. All were happy to receive their toil’s fruit. In order to check their language efficiency, the college organized role-play activities. They learned with fun and exhibited their competence they acquired in their training.

 Problems encountered and Resources Required

Education and skill development is the key to women empowerment. Women can be enabled to face the challenges of life on the basis of education and skills. Negative parental attitude towards educating daughters is one of the important challenges to promote the girl’s education in India. The chief problem faced by most of girls is that they belongs to distant and interior rural areas and have not enough transport means for up down from their homes as well as they are also from poor background families which can’t afford daily fare charges of buses.  Lack of social consciousness in rural areas for girl education, unwillingness of lady teachers to serve in rural areas, Infrastructure, budget and trainer for skill development programmes etc. are the key problems for implementing the practice. In getting skilled trainers for various subjects of skill development, adequate funds and time, the college is facing many difficulties.

Title of the practice :- Seth Kundanmal Sethia Smriti State Level Inter-colleges Hindi Debate Competition

 Objectives of the Practice

The main objective of higher education is to build better intellectual citizens who may have thoughtfulness, deep regard for democratic values, have skills of leadership and who may be curious to strike the path of innovation for acquiring more and more knowledge and have the capability to distinguish truth.

With these objectives, a number of educational institutes keep on organizing co-curricular activities besides the teaching practices. This institution also organizes one such activity and that is a literary activity ‘State Level Inter-colleges Debate Competition’ which focuses on developing and enhancing oratory as well as debating skill among the students.

 The Context

In debate competition, the participants of two conflicting views put forward their arguments and refute each other’s views. After listening to their viewpoints for and against the chosen topic, the panel of judges analysed their competence and finalized the result. Such type of activities not only enhances the critical thinking of the participants but also provides a chance to the audience to understand the importance of listening with the touch of respecting different point of views. By organizing such competitions all aspects of a current subject are considered and discussed with the view of increasing awareness and knowledge.

The challenges that the institute face in organizing such activities are chiefly related to limited sources and geographical location of the institute. One of the major problems of the students, getting education in this college, is that most of them are from rural background. Their least exposure to such events on big scale makes them a bit hesitant due to their typical local dialectic tone.

 The Practice

Generally debate competition is helpful in improving the tempo and level of understanding of the students. It enhances subject related thoughts, analytical power and evidence based reasoning etc. In order to ensure the above mentioned goals that state level debate competition was organized in college for all. Several practice sessions were held before selecting the participants, and then the best students were selected through conducting pre-competition. Students who were in the role of audience also provided their encouraging support.  Such practices enhance and promote quality education. It is also observed that students actively participating in such activities have made identity at higher level too by working with self-confidence and exhibiting better leadership skill in whatever fields they have entered.

In the context, if we look at the objective of higher education, then it is to help building such a personality that is psychologically enlightened. Only then we can expand the boundaries of knowledge and prepare disciplined and rational citizens of the future India. It is the constant endeavour of the institute that along with obtaining a degree, the students pass with flying colours and with uplifted skills of decision making, comprehension, analysis, communications, writing and better thought process. During the past four decades of its journey of development, this institution has been ceaselessly organizing this competition. Students very actively and enthusiastically participate in the programme as speakers/debaters as well as listeners.

Topic of the debate is selected from the current social and political events with the aim to make the students acquainted with the activities and events taking place around them and create awareness about the social, political and cultural activities of India and the world. Besides this, participants acquire better skills of expression and become good orators.

Along with this, contributing to the nation’s development remains the underlying goal of higher education institutions. Channelizing power of young minds positively and in the right direction will help in achieving this goal. They will imbibe awareness and become disciplined citizens in the future.

Prior to this state level competition, team of the college was selected at class-level competitions and through other platforms of various activities already going on in the college. Such class-level competitions enhance self-confidence, leadership quality among the students. Students develop mutual cooperative skills and endurance through such activities besides getting acquainted with the nationally and internationally significant issues.

The institute has been organizing this State Level Debate Competition in the memory of Seth Kundan Mal Sethia for last four decades. The sponsors have full faith in the organisation/institution that their amount and time are being thoroughly utilised. The family or a representative of them remains present in the competition as an observer. Renowned people are invited as guests of honour as well as jury of members. Dignitaries of the city including many media persons also grace the occasion with their presence in it. This debate competition has given the institution a state level recognition. Those students, who have participated in such activities, are working successfully in various fields. A prominent and well known name among them is Dr. Ajay Choudhary, working as deputy director, Medical and Health services, Jaipur. In the feedback sought from him in this regard, he mentioned that the debate forum gave him an opportunity to groom his confidence and leadership skills which is of great use to him even today. At present he is successfully working as President of All Rajasthan in Service Doctors Association (ARISDA). In this sequence, Mr. Abhishek Charan who has been a participant in our debate, today he is an assistant Professor in JVB Deemed University, Ladnun, Rajasthan.

 Problems Encountered and Resources Required

College is located on the border of Churu district. The climate of the district is extremely hot and dry. There is excessive rise and fall in the temperature, in summer season the temperature rises up to 49 and on the other hand in winter season it falls up to -1. It becomes one of the coldest places of India in winter season.

The major problem that the institute face is the sudden unfavourable weather condition during the co-curricular programmes as there is no auditorium. Large scale activities are to be organised under tents. Hence the most essential requirement for this institution is a large auditorium with excellent sound system. Language lab with skilled language trainer is essential to remove such common hurdles of the students. They lag behind the student of other big cities when they face interviews, group discussion and other presentations.

 Conclusion

Overcoming all such challenges and sometimes struggling with them, the institute keeps on organizing this state level debate competition with the help of Sethia family from Delhi. It is matter of pleasure and pride that this type of competition is organised with the cooperation of the people. This leads to the involvement and participation of the local gentry. Such activities necessarily have a positive impact on the society and personality development of students.

*Due to Covid-19, Activities were not organised during session 2020-21.*
