History of College
Gauri Devi Government College for Women, Alwar is a premier education and research institute dedicated to female education in the district. It was established in 1964 by Government of Rajasthan to cater to the educational needs of women. The land for the college was donated by an eminent socialist and pioneer of education for women, Lala Ram Richhpal to the government in memory of his mother Smt. Gauri Devi. This college, which began with 135 students, has completed 58 years of its proud existence and today there are 5500 students enrolled in the college. Similarly, the number of teaching staff has gone up to 58. Location-wise the college is nestled almost at the center of the city
and has a vibrant lush green campus.
The college started functioning in its present building in 1966 and has crossed many milestones in its glorious journey. Honors in Political Science started in 1968 and B. Com classes began in 1980. Another feather in its cap is the introduction of post-Graduate classes in Political Science and Psychology in 1992 and the opening of Girls’ Hostel in 1993 with a capacity for 186 students.
Soon Post Graduate Classes in Hindi were introduced in 1995 and Sanskrit in 1999. Another proud moment for college was in 2007 when English Language Lab was established and in 2012, keeping pace with the demand of time internet facility was introduced in the college campus. In 2013, a Gymnasium and Girls’ Common Room were also opened. Till 2015, the college was affiliated to the University of Rajasthan, Jaipur and from 2016 it has been affiliated to Raj Rishi Bhratrihari Matsya University, Alwar. The college offers 21 UG Courses, 4 PG courses besides Honors in Political Science and Diploma course in Library Science. The College has a
beautiful building with 42 spacious, ventilated classrooms, one Seminar Hall, Staff Room and a dedicated room for the Students’ Union.
