HISTORY

Dungarpur was founded in 1282 AD by Rawal Veer Singh Dev. It was then popularly known as Dungar na Gharan. The word ‘Dungar’ stands for hills in the local dialect (Vagadi). Later, in 1358 AD, Rawal renamed it ‘Dungarpur’. Dungarpur is not only naturally beautiful but also boasts of marvelous historical architecture. Gaip Sagar, a lake situated in the heart of the city, adds charm and beauty to the town.

The college is named after a native tribal girl of twelve years, Kali Bai, who sacrificed her life in a desperate attempt to save her teacher from the brutal atrocities of the police force of the erstwhile state in the pre-independence era. The exceptional bravery and exemplary sacrifice earned her the title of ‘Veerbala’ (Brave Girl). Veerbala Kali Bai has become a symbol of undaunted courage and a source of inspiration for the young women of the region.

It was on June 19, 1947 that the state police force, ordered, as part of its diabolic drive to stem the spread of education, Nana Bhai Khant and Senga Bhai Bhil, the teachers of Rastapal, a tiny tribal village near Dungarpur, to close their school with immediate effect. The teachers refused to comply with the orders. As a result, the one was immediately killed by infuriated officers and the other was tied to a jeep and dragged on the rough road . Watching her teacher being dragged to death, the young pupil, Kali Bai, lost her patience and in a bid to save his life, picked up a sickle and severed the rope with a stroke. The inflictors then opened fire at the young saviour. Fatally wounded, Kali Bai fell down on the ground and met a heroic end for the cause of education.

Despite being rich in cultural heritage and skills of art and craft, the tribal community of Dungarpur has not been able to make significant progress in terms of higher education. The situation among tribal women is much less encouraging. The mission of the college, therefore, is to promote higher education among tribal women of Dungarpur and neighbouring areas. As the first government girls’ college of the district, it has put before itself the aim of providing avenues of education, especially higher education for the tribal population of Dungarpur.
