HISTORY

Govt. Meera Girls College saw the light of dawn in 1956 with 18 students and 5 teachers & then soared high to become a multi-faculty degree college in 1959 and a post graduate college in 1977. Today it is home to about 5376 students, 138 lecturers and 39 non-teaching staff.

Initially named as Maharana Intermediate College, the college got its present name, Meera Girls’ College, in the tenure of Smt. Indira Shekhar, the first principal. Named after “Meera”, the epitome of devotion and dedication, the college today lives up to its name as its dedicated staff members under the able  guidance of the Principal work towards its progress. In a long span of fifty six years, certain new traditions came into vogue. During the term of the principal,  Smt. Rama Kochar (1975-79) a dress code(white salwar & dupatta with a pink kurta) was adopted in order to develop the feeling of discipline, unity and uniformity in the students.

The college started in the building of a nearby school. Soon, in 1957, the foundation stone of the existing building was laid down by the then Governor of Rajasthan, Shri Gurumukh Nihal Singh. Before long, the building was constructed & inaugurated by the then Defence Minister of India, Shri V.K. Krishnamenon on Feb.2nd, 1961. Since then the college advancing on the path of development has expanded and extended and is now spread in 29.052 acres of area. Presently, it has a magnificent infrastructure with the main building which has a Central Hall, Seminar Room, Laboratories, I.T. Centre, Smart Class, Canteen , spacious Class Rooms etc. In addition to this there are two Hostels, a Library, an Administrative Block and a Sports Academy.

The college has a huge Library building enriched with numerous books and journals which was inaugurated on Jan. 20th, 1982 by the then Chief Minister of Rajasthan , Sh. Shiv Charan Mathur. It has undergone expansion once in 2004-05 and again in 2006-07.

The large number of students’ intake made it essential to have a separate Administrative Block in the college. Shri Gulabchand Kataria,  the then Home Minister of Rajasthan inaugurated it on Dec.13th, 2006. All the official work is meticulously carried out here with the use of computers.

In 2006, the college accomplished fifty years of glory. It was a proud moment for the college as the guest of honour at the golden jubilee celebration was Dr. Girija Vyas, the alumnae and the then chairperson of National Women Commission.

Right from its inception in 1956, the college in a long journey of about six decades has been under the able supervision of thirty four principals. Since then the efforts of the dedicated faculty members have taken the college on the path of progress and development. Presently, the college is fortunate enough to reap the fruits of experience and guidance of its Principal  who are forever sincerely dedicated towards the noble cause of education.
