Haridev Joshi University of Journalism and Mass Communication (HJU) is a state university established in 2019 through an Act of the Rajasthan Vidhan Sabha.
Named after an eminent former Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Haridev Joshi, who was also a freedom fighter and a committed journalist in the tribal region of Banswara, HJU aims to be one of India’s premier universities dedicated to the study of journalism and mass communication.
Located in Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, HJU offers an innovative curriculum that seeks to combine theory and practice through its academic programmes based on an interdisciplinary approach. As a professional university dedicated to media academics, courses offered at HJU provide a healthy mix of theoretical knowledge, technical skills and practical training in the various specialized areas of journalism and mass communication. The university aims to educate students who may want to work as journalists or as media professionals in other capacities by creating a globally viable curriculum.
India’s vibrant media industry has seen enormous expansion in recent decades - newspaper circulation is growing rapidly, magazines are launched regularly and numerous TV stations are licensed annually and the emerging field of digital or online media is growing exponentially. Despite this impressive growth, the need to consolidate media strengths, improve the intellectual arsenal of its practitioners and enhance ethical standards of journalism in the country can hardly be overstated.
HJU aims to fulfill this social need through its creative academic programmes that will provide opportunities for personal and professional growth to its students. By encouraging students to think critically and by training them creatively, HJU plans to educate and enrich its students to become fully integrated members of the media industry.
Given its commitment to the core values of the Indian Constitution, HJU will strive to create a cadre of students who are not only professionally competent but also ethically sound and display a firm resolve to promote public welfare, strengthen secular values, nurture democratic forces and protect human rights in Indian society.
