HISTORY

HISTORY OF BEAWAR DISTRICT

In the early 1800s, Beawar slumbered as a quaint village. By 1825, the British arrived, acquiring control of the Ajmer-Merwara region and establishing a cantonment near the existing settlement. Just over a decade later, in 1836, Colonel George Dickson, a visionary leader, sought to breathe new life into the area. He enticed merchants and constructed a bustling bazaar, the heart of a nascent town called "Naya Shahar" or "New Town." This new settlement, nestled beside the cantonment and the original village, gradually blossomed into the present-day Beawar.

The town's population surged over the next ten years, fueled by a thriving cotton trade. However, in 1871, the military presence shifted, with the battalion relocating to Ajmer. Despite this, Beawar's commercial spirit remained undimmed, solidifying its position as a crucial trading hub.

The year 1866 marked another milestone - the establishment of a municipality in Beawar. Soon after, in 1880, the iron horse arrived, connecting the town to the wider world. This pivotal moment was followed by the establishment of the Krishna Cotton Mill in 1881, further solidifying Beawar's industrial prowess. By the turn of the 20th century, Beawar boasted a population of over 21,000, with nearly half its workforce employed in the manufacturing sector, predominantly within the cotton textile industry. Metalwork, calico printing, and grain trade also played significant roles in the town's economic landscape.

Beyond its commercial contributions, Beawar has also birthed remarkable individuals. The renowned mathematician, Duncan Sommerville, hailed from this very soil. Moreover, Beawar played a pivotal role in India's journey towards transparency, as it served as the birthplace of the historic Right to Information Act, 2005, spearheaded by the visionary leader, Aruna Roy. Thus, Beawar's story is not merely one of commerce and industry, but also one of innovation, intellectual pursuit, and a relentless pursuit of justice.

As the development and expansion of Bewar continues to grow, In 2023 on the recommendation of Ramlubhaya Committee Beawar city has been given the status of a district.
