Government College, Barmer has carved its position as one of the prestigious Institutions of Higher Learning in the western part of Rajasthan. It has come a long way since the sixties of the last century for a new dawn in the intellectual life in populace. 10 July, 1965 will go down in the history of Barmer as a landmark. On this day Government College, Barmer was established with the small number of students the college embarked on its journey towards future and gradually grew into a multi-faculty co-educational institution. Since its inception in 1965 as an Under-graduate college with the faculty of Arts, Science and commerce, the college has witnessed constant development. In 1977 with the efforts of lovers of knowledge, this institution gained the reputation of Post-graduate college. The subjects introduced at this level were Political Science, History and ABST. As years passed in a backward area like Barmer, the demand for higher education increased and in Faculty of Science M.Sc. was introduced in 2015. In Botany, M.Sc. has also been sanctioned in 2022. With constant efforts of increasing opportunities of Higher Education and various programs among diverse and wider section of people of this region the college is at present offering general 3-year degree course programs in 15 academic departments and 2-years postgraduate course programs in four academic departments under Science, Arts and Commerce. At present Government College, Barmer is affiliated to Jai Narain Vyas University, Jodhpur and recognized by the UGC under 2(f) and 12(B) of UGC Act.
The college is on its 57th Year. During these years, Government College, Barmer has been guided by the concept of excellence in academic and co-curricular aspects. The Institution has promoted the cause of Collegiate Education while inspiring its alumni to inculcate the virtues of tolerance and understanding. Mutual respects, appreciation of goodness, sensitiveness to the spiritual sense of humanity, zest for learning are the basic mantras which we try to teach our student as pre-requisites for acquiring knowledge and conducting themselves successfully in the affairs of the world. The more pragmatic aspect of career building and academic success are stressed. Efficient leadership and support provided by our competent dedicated faculty members, staff, proactive students and committees contribute to the development of values of the institution. This Institute provides the right environment for natural learning in harmony with grooming oriented education to the predominantly rural students in order to make them sharers in social progress and nation building. The students are empowered not just with education but with moral values and social skills which remain their prized possession forever. The college can proudly proclaim to have nurtured and created generations of competent, accomplished and empowered students.
Being a co-education institution, we have been constantly impressing upon the student to create a culture of respect for women and to recognize the worth and potential of women. The college is sensitive towards various groups of society. We have girls, boys, trans-gender, differently abled students and students from different categories, SC, ST, OBC, EWS, Minority and General. The campus is free from ragging, sexual-harassment and anti-social activities.
The college has a team of sincere and committed faculty members. Our teachers adopt innovative teaching practices like increased participation of students during theory sessions, assignments, personnel counselling including guidance for various competitions and seminars, presentations etc. Though the most preferred mode of teaching is through offline classes but during corona pandemic both offline and online classes were conducted. College has its You-Tube channel and LMS where lectures were uploaded and links were shared with students in Whats-App groups. The college has one smart room, one e-classroom, an ICT room and a K-Yan room. There are a good number of computers in the college with internet facilities. The college is well equipped with a good library having more than 41000 books consisting of text and reference books that contributes in increasing the knowledge of the students. All the science department of the college have well equipped spacious Laboratories.
In addition to routine curricular activities and teaching learning process the college gives emphasis on community development works for multi-faceted development of the students and for creating a sense of discipline. In order to achieve this along with inculcation of human values and social commitment among the students the college encourages the student to take part in various programs like environmental awareness, health awareness, legal awareness, blood donation programs, women empowerment program, literacy programs, sanitization and cleanliness programs etc.
The college is committed to develop feeling of nationality, oneness, dedication and patriotism in its students. Prerna Sthal with pictures of Shaheed Prem Singh and Shaheed Piraram, Large national flag hoisted in the campus, celebration of immemorable days of Indian freedom struggle, days of national importance storms the young minds and inculcates national spirit among them that transforms these young generations into responsible citizens.
The college makes every effort to conserve and protect our environment. The roof-top is fitted with solar panels. LED lights are used. Water conservation practices are used very efficiently. Rain water is harvested both from roof top and as surface run-off. One Matki- One Plant, use of sprinklers, formation of bunds around plants helps in maintaining green cover with minimal utilization of water. Despite the hot arid climate of the region Government College, Barmer is able to maintain green large trees in the campus through such practices. We try to create awareness among students for environmental protection. Plastic bottles, rubber tyres are re-used. We are the recipients of District Green Champion certificate by Government of India.
As far as co-curricular extension services are concerned, the college has an NCC unit of 200 cadets, 3 NSS unit of 100 volunteers each that organize and conduct different social and community service activities in and outside the college. Besides this, one crew of Air-Rovers and one crew of Rover scouts are doing commendable work in community service. Similarly Literary and Cultural Committee, Women Cell, Red Ribbon Club, Sexual Grievance Redressal Cell, IQAC, CDC, UGC, RUSA Committee exhibit efficiency in carrying out their given work.
An Internal Quality Assurance Cell has been framed out that is constantly making efforts for the betterment of education and multi-dimensional development of the institution. A 7-Criterion committee is working under IQAC and looks after the improvement of quality of the institution in different aspects. The college was assessed for the first time by NAAC in March 2007 and was affiliated with B grade in the first cycle. The second cycle of accreditation was carried out in 2015 with B grade.
